Drones can help locate noxious weeds

Even if you haven’t immersed yourself in the drone world much yet, you know about its benefits. One of a drone’s greatest advantages is its ability to visually access areas that are hard – or impossible – to reach on foot or by vehicle. So when it comes to locating noxious weeds on your land or identifying and tracking problems in the field, a drone is likely the tool that will get you answers most easily and efficiently.

Of course, there are also several challenges related to drone use. You probably know there are a multitude of FAA regulations, in addition to the nature of photogrammetry, liability insurance, licensing, property access and ever-changing technology.

We’ve put a good amount of effort into clearing these hurdles, and we’re looking forward to sharing what we’ve learned and presenting some solutions. My colleague and I will be presenting at the North Dakota Weed Control Association annual conference at the Ramada Inn in Bismarck this week. We plan to connect and answer questions pertaining to flight plans, identifying problem areas via drone flight photos, FFA requirements and data processing, and learn from you how we can be an effective partner for weed boards.

We present during the breakout sessions on Wednesday, and hope you’ll join us to learn how we can work together to capitalize on the amazing opportunities drones provide.
