5th Annual FM BrainSTEM Event

The Fifth Annual FM BrainSTEM Event was held on Tuesday, October 25th. BrainSTEM is an event where local students are able to learn hands-on about careers in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math (STEM) fields that may interest them.

Alexa, a Project Manager at Moore Engineering, founded this event in 2016 with the goal of exposing students to STEM occupations while also promoting diversity and reducing prejudice and bias.

The students each attended three of the twenty-one hands-on workshops, led by professors, students, and industry professionals who are from underrepresented groups in STEM. Workshop topics included drones, pollination, human cognition, building, engineering, roadway design, codes, hibernation, nanotechnology, and much more.

Two Moore Engineering employees taught workshops at the event! Yaping led “Slender Tower Challenge”, and Alison led “Roadway Design”.

There is a lack of available workers in STEM occupations, and also a lack of diversity. The hope is that events such as this give all students a chance to learn from leaders from different backgrounds.

The organizations that helped put on the event were the North Dakota American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE), NDSU’s College of Engineering, Concordia College, The Fargo-Moorhead American Association of University Women (AAUW), and MSUM.
