Embracing Engineers Week

Engineers Week (February 19-25) is quickly approaching. This week is a time to recognize and celebrate the difference engineers make in our world and introduce kids to engineering-based career opportunities.

At Moore, we work to spread the news and create some hype during Engineers Week to recognize our employees, as well as encourage and impact future engineers. We’ve taken part in Introduce a Girl to Engineering Day (February 23 this year) for several years, but we’re adding another event to the lineup this year. Here’s the lowdown on both events:

Introduce a Girl to Engineering Day (Girl Day)

Girl Day is a worldwide campaign to introduce girls to engineering. Thousands of engineers, teachers and role models dedicate a portion of their day to educate girls about how engineers change our world. Locally, North Dakota State University hosts an event designed to challenge young women with engineering-based activities and push them to think differently.

Afterward, the girls break into groups and travel to area businesses for further activities and lessons from engineers in the field. Three of our female engineers, Caroline Bohn, Alexa Ducioame and Yaping Chi, contribute, not just on Girl Day, but continually through the year at many events promoting engineering and STEM (science, technology, engineering and math) education, in general.

Dream Big

Moore Engineering is also a local sponsor for the showing of Dream Big: Engineering Our World, a film about engineering. The film is being screened for students across the country, including North Dakota, thanks to a few local sponsors who banded together to arrange screenings here.

Moore teamed up with the American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE), Gateway to Science, the North Dakota Society of Professional Engineers (NDSPE) and KLJ to make the film available to university and high school students in Grand Forks, Fargo, Bismarck, Watford City and Minot.

The film features amazing views – from the tallest buildings and most unique designs – to inspire young students to consider careers in engineering and demonstrate how today’s engineers shape our future.

Lots of other companies are joining us in making a splash out of Engineers Week, celebrating engineering and engaging with youth. This week has been celebrated since 1951 and was founded by the National Society of Professional Engineers.
