Always There

It’s National Public Works Week.

Maybe you’ve seen the poster in your workplace. With the theme, “Public Works: Always There,” these posters (and this week) showcase the pervasiveness of public works staff in communities across the nation. Clearly, each community depends – heavily – on its Public Works Department. And, without a doubt, the men and women of the profession are always ready to make our lives better.

Since 1960, the American Public Works Association has sponsored National Public Works Week. Across North America, more than 29,000 members use this week to energize and educate the public on the importance of public works. This year, the campaign is going so well, they’ve sold out of the posters (cool animated graphics help a lot!).

Public works touches on multiple arenas – planning, building, managing and operating everything from parks and beaches to trees and green space, from police and courts to community centers and social services. And, in areas like ours, you can’t forget clearing the roads during that cold, drawn-out snow season.

Essentially, public works professionals are at the heart of our local communities, ensuring their work maintains, and even elevates, the residents’ quality of life.

It’s a good time to say “thank you” to the men and women on your city’s public works team!
