St. Augusta, MN – 2024 Roadway & Street Improvements Project

CHALLENGE

As the pavement infrastructure ages, issues such as cracking, deterioration, and surface deformation become prevalent, leading to compromised safety and increased maintenance costs. The specific challenge for this project was to address the deteriorating conditions of residential roadways that have experienced significant wear and tear, impacting traffic flow and posing risks to vehicles.

SOLUTION

This project involved the implementation of Full Depth Reclamation (FDR) combined with bituminous paving to rehabilitate the distressed roadway. The scope included:

  • Assessment and Planning: Conducting a thorough assessment of the existing pavement conditions and soil characteristics to determine the extent of damage and the best rehabilitation methods.
  • Full Depth Reclamation: Utilizing FDR techniques to pulverize the existing pavement and underlying materials, effectively recycling them to create a new base layer that would improve structural integrity and enhance load-bearing capacity.
  • Bituminous Paving: Following the reclamation, a new bituminous surface was laid to provide a durable, smooth driving surface that improved traction and safety.

OUTCOME

The solution incorporated the following key components:

  • Environmental Sustainability: By recycling existing materials through FDR, the project minimized waste and reduced the need for new raw materials, contributing to environmentally sustainable practices in infrastructure development.
  • Cost-Effectiveness: FDR is a cost-effective method that reduces the need for extensive excavation and new materials, significantly lowering overall project costs compared to traditional reconstruction methods.
  • Enhanced Durability: The combination of a reclaimed base layer and a new bituminous surface provides a robust, long-lasting solution capable of withstanding the stresses of heavy traffic and adverse weather conditions.

By addressing the challenges of pavement deterioration with innovative techniques, this project restores road safety, enhances durability, and improves overall transportation efficiency in the area.
