Fargo & West Fargo, ND – 40th Ave. Expansion

Challenge

This project required reconstructing the 1.5 miles of existing two-lane 40th Ave. S. from Drain 27 to Sheyenne. The stretch needed to be urbanized and built into a four-lane street with turn lane channelization to provide capacity for the predicted future volumes of traffic. Further, the stretch required multi-use paths, street lights, and traffic signals at the cross sections of 54th St. and Veterans Boulevard.

Solution

Moore Engineering collaborated with the cities of Fargo and West Fargo in preparation of the street, storm sewer and minor water main design for areas within the project limits. Moore performed design, construction administration, observation and construction staking and kept in close communication with the cities and school located within the corridor. In addition to concrete pavement in the roadway, a concrete shared-use path was installed adjacent the roadway, where none were previously constructed, to accommodate pedestrian and non-vehicular traffic. Decorative colored concrete was used in medians and boulevards in areas too narrow to support vegetation and where deicing materials would have detrimental effects on vegetation.

Outcome

Roadway improvements were completed on time and have facilitated safety for the traveling public and also accommodate safe pedestrian accessibility. The project received the Gold Award for Excellence in Concrete by the North Dakota Ready-mix Association for 2014.
