Fargo, ND – Shanley Athletic Turf, Track and Field Facilities Reconstruction Project
CHALLENGE
In 2009, Moore Engineering partnered with Shanley High School to install the area’s first artificial turf athletic field, providing the school’s football and soccer programs with their first permanent home since the school’s inception in 1882. However, the turf at Sid Cichy Stadium had outlived its expected lifespan, necessitating replacement to maintain safety and performance. This project also offered the opportunity to introduce the first-ever track and field facilities for Catholic schools in Fargo. Key challenges included maintaining the existing grandstand, adjusting the turf location, accommodating ongoing school activities adjacent to the construction site, appeasing nearby residents, and meeting City of Fargo requirements. An aggressive schedule was necessary to align construction with football and other events, requiring seamless coordination among all stakeholders.
SOLUTION
A modern artificial turf field with a stone base and full-coverage underdrain system was selected to ensure long-lasting performance, even in wet weather. Improved site drainage, landscaping and new stadium lighting were also included in the project. The turf was successfully completed on time to accommodate the football schedule; however, due to weather impacts, the track surfacing was postponed to the following spring to ensure the proper environment for installation and delivery of a quality product. Moore Engineering collaborated closely with school staff to design and execute the new turf field, regulation track, field event areas, and miscellaneous stadium improvements. Care was taken to preserve the existing grandstand and minimize disruption to daily school activities. Additionally, Moore worked with adjacent residents to address their concerns and ensure smooth project progression.
OUTCOME
Shanley High School now enjoys a state-of-the-art athletic complex, featuring a high-performance turf field, regulation track, and full-service field event spaces. The new facilities have simplified practice schedules, improved athletic operations, and expanded the school’s ability to host events that were previously not possible. The project was completed on time and in compliance with City of Fargo requirements, allowing athletic programs to start their seasons without delay. This transformation reinforces Shanley’s legacy as the first school in the area to install turf in 2009 and serves as a point of pride for Shanley High School and the JPII Schools, reflecting their commitment to athletic excellence and community engagement.
