Costco Wholesale

CHALLENGE

Costco identified Bismarck, ND as its next major city for a retail center. Bismarck was identified due to its central location in the region and would easily draw customers from the surrounding areas such as Minot, Dickinson, Williston, and other small communities in rural central North Dakota. The most ideal location was determined to be North Bismarck, on a parcel that contains significant elevation change from north to south. Moore Engineering was tasked with engineering a site design that will work for Costco’s 3.5-acre building footprint and nearly 300 parking spaces, along with adequate space for delivery trucks to enter in and out of the site.

SOLUTION

Moore worked with Costco’s developer to develop a plan for this difficult site in north Bismarck. The grading plan included 20,000 CY of earth to be moved and a long retaining wall to be constructed near the fuel station of the property. A large scale storm water design and report was completed to ensure the building would not be inundated with water in rain events, and make sure that excess runoff would not have negative downstream affects in the Hay Creek watershed. Moore also offered construction support as necessary during construction.

OUTCOME

Our plan for the development of the site allowed for a successful construction effort, and Costco Wholesale opened as scheduled on August 25, 2020.
