Mapping History With 3D Modeling Survey Services at St. Mary’s Cathedral

Survey technology has come a long way since the days of manual measurements and elementary geometry. Today, the integration of cutting-edge tools like 3D modeling has changed the way we conduct surveys and data collection. At Moore Engineering, we recognize the importance of staying at the forefront of innovation. Doing so allows us to provide our clients with the highest quality services. No project demonstrates our survey capabilities more than those we provided to the Cathedral of St. Mary in Fargo, ND.

Architectural Icon

To anyone who has driven down Broadway in Downtown Fargo, North Dakota, you understand why the Cathedral of St. Mary is a historic landmark. Constructed in 1899, the building has served as a central part of Fargo’s identity for over 120 years.

After more than a century of service to the community, the St. Mary Cathedral is having new life breathed into it by a team of experts – each an artist in their craft.

3D Modeling for Precision Surveying

Peter Tupa, Land Survey Manager, led Moore Engineering’s survey efforts that would contribute to the renovation and rehabilitation of the building’s most iconic art.

Central to our approach was the use of 3D modeling technology. The X7 Trimble scanner, a sophisticated tool in our team’s arsenal, captured the intricate details of the Cathedral’s interior. This technology allowed us to create a full 3D rendering of the building – a precise representation of its architecture and dimensions.

One of the key advantages of 3D modeling is its ability to seamlessly integrate data. During the scanning process, the X7 Trimble scanner geo-referenced itself, rendering the scans into a cohesive and accurate 3D model.

Survey for Delicate Renovations

The Cathedral of St. Mary is no ordinary building. Its historical and architectural significance demanded precision in the upcoming renovations. Thanks to the 3D model we created, every aspect of the renovation process can be meticulously planned and executed. Accurate measurements and surface area calculations are essential steps in the artistic process.

The painter tasked with adorning the Cathedral’s arching ceilings can use this model to visualize and plan their artwork with precision. The 3D model ensures no detail is overlooked, so every brushstroke is in harmony with the building’s unique architecture.

Pioneering the Future of Survey Services

At its core, Engineering uses mathematics and technology to elevate the human experience. As Moore Engineering continues to pioneer the future of survey services, we remain dedicated to our mission of “improving lives by building strong community services.”

By harnessing the power of survey technology and 3D modeling in our survey services, we open doors to new possibilities. We’re excited to see how technology continues to change the survey field.
