Mountrail & Ward Counties, ND- Highway 50 Grade Raise
CHALLENGE
Based on a hydraulic analysis, the project area was identified as a critical location where rising water was approaching the roadway and presented a risk of overtopping. As a part of the analysis, the existing centerline culvert was planned for analyzation for compliance with ND Stream Crossing Standards. The culvert was located below the water surface and could not be located to be analyzed, however as the water levels on each side of the road were uneven, it is assumed that the existing culvert was not functioning and should be replaced. Additionally, the roadway had narrow 2-foot shoulders that should be widened for safety reasons.
SOLUTION
Construction of a highway grade raise along with the installation of a new 36” concrete pipe culvert was selected to address the issues with this section of roadway. Geotextile Fabric and rip-rap were installed to prevent erosion of the roadway embankment. Moore Engineering was hired by the ND Department of Transportation to complete the construction administration, field engineering, inspection, surveying and materials testing for this project. Moore Engineering utilized Braun Intertec to complete the materials testing required for the project. Gratech Company was awarded the construction contract for this project in the fall of 2022.
OUTCOME
The roadway was raised approximately 6.5’ and widened to accommodate 6-foot wide shoulders. Dirt work began on August 15, 2023 with paving being completed on October 20, 2023. Permanent erosion control and seeding were not able to be installed in 2023 due to weather conditions, so that was completed in 2024. Construction was completed on time and within budget.
