Identifying and Managing Mayville Dam #2 Reconstruction Funding
Challenge
After severe flooding in 2022, Mayville, ND experienced major damage to one of their dams. This project reconstructed the failed dam and restored the nearby campground and river access. With a total project cost of $6 million, the financial burden was unrealistic for the small city of Mayville.
Solution
The City of Mayville turned to Moore Engineering to lead a funding strategy to minimize costs. Leveraging expertise in identifying and securing funding, the Funding Services Team helped secure $5.8 million from four state and federal funding sources. FEMA Hazard Mitigation Grant Program covered 75% of the total cost and additional funding came from the North Dakota Department of Emergency Services, the Outdoor Heritage Fund, and the North Dakota Department of Water Resources. By securing these state and federal resources, Moore Engineering’s Funding Services Team reduced Mayville’s out-of-pocket costs to 3% of the total project expense.
Outcome
The successful application and coordination of these funds has allowed Mayville to implement crucial safety measures, enhance environmental conditions, and restore community use of the river and nearby campground with very little cost to the City.
For small cities like Mayville, tackling large infrastructure projects can seem overwhelming. Our Funding Services team has helped relieve this financial burden by identifying diverse funding sources, managing the complexities of applications, and maximizing financial support to minimize local costs.
